We must open this first official posting on “All-About-Wallabout” by discussing a bit about our goals for the website. First, we are aware that most New Yorkers (and even most Brooklynites) have never heard of the term “Wallabout.” The Historic Wallabout association defines Wallabout as the 22 block area bounded by Navy Street to the west, the Brooklyn Navy Yard to the north, Myrtle Avenue to the south and Classon Avenue to the east.

See the map below for the shaded region

For several decades Wallabout has been a sleepy little enclave that has been remarkably unremarkable. There have been no shiny new developments with multi-million dollar penthouses, no fancy restaurants and celebrity sightings are virtually non-existent. Since 2000, neighboring areas such as Dumbo, Williamsburg and Clinton Hill have experienced massive amounts of development, leaving Wallabout in the dust. However, times are beginning to change- and change quickly.

Recently, there has been a flurry of activity within these 22 blocks, leaving Wallabout looking poised for a fast transition from its previously quiet state. New Townhouses are beginning to line several of Wallabout’s blocks, restaurants are opening, plans have been proposed to add mass transit to the area, and the Navy Yard is experiencing a revival of activity not seen since World War II.

Over the coming months and years, we intend to chronicle the transition that is taking place within Wallabout by writing articles on development plans that will shape the area’s future. We will also feature local businesses on AllaboutWallabout in an effort to enhance their brands and drive more customer traffic to their stores.
